Recovery is the product
A backup you have not restored from is a hope. We schedule restore tests so that the first time you rely on it is not the first time it has been tried.
What is in scope, and what is not

Not in scope: pretending a NAS is a backup by itself. A NAS is where files live; the backup is the separate copy somewhere else. We say this because the two are conflated constantly and the difference only becomes visible on the day something goes wrong. NAS hardware and drives are quoted for current data plus three years of growth; backup software and cloud storage are a monthly fee based on protected volume; setup and restore-test scheduling are a fixed scope.

No, and the confusion is expensive. A NAS is where files live and it protects against a single disk failing. A backup is a separate copy, ideally off-site, that protects against the NAS itself being lost, stolen, encrypted or flooded. You need both, and a NAS that is also the only copy of everything is a single point of failure with a nice interface.
Restore something real at least quarterly, and after any change to the backup setup. A test restore is the only evidence a backup works, and the failure modes -- a job that reports success while copying nothing useful, or a restore that takes days rather than hours -- are invisible until you try. We schedule and document these as part of support.
Long enough to recover from a problem you do not notice immediately, which is longer than most people assume: ransomware, corruption and accidental deletion are often discovered weeks later. For regulated records such as financial or health data the minimum is set by the regulator and can be years or decades, which changes the design from a rotating drive to something that can genuinely hold records that long.
