Why your office Wi-Fi is slow (and what actually fixes it)
It is almost never the internet line. Here is where the problem usually sits.
The line is fine — the network is not
When Wi-Fi is slow, the instinct is to call the ISP and upgrade the line. Nine times out of ten the line is fine; the problem is inside the office: too few access points, consumer equipment, bad placement, or everyone sharing one congested channel.
A proper survey maps signal strength desk by desk and shows exactly where coverage collapses. Usually the answer is more, smaller access points placed on ceilings rather than one powerful router in the corner — plus a wired backbone so the access points are not competing with each other.
Business-grade equipment also lets you separate guest traffic, prioritise video calls and see what is actually using the bandwidth.
The usual causes, in order:
- One router trying to cover the whole floor.
- Access points mounted low or behind walls and cabinets.
- Consumer hardware that cannot handle 40+ devices.
- Guest and staff traffic on the same network.
- Printers and screens on Wi-Fi when they should be wired.

Full-speed Wi-Fi in every room, video calls that do not drop, and a dashboard that tells you what is happening before someone complains.

Usually not first. Test speed on a wired connection: if the wired speed is fine, the problem is the Wi-Fi network, not the line. Access point count, placement and channel congestion are the typical causes.
Roughly one business-grade access point per 20–30 users or per 100–150 square metres of open space, adjusted for walls and meeting rooms. A heat-map survey gives the exact placement.
Consumer mesh systems work for homes but struggle with 40+ devices, VLAN separation and guest isolation. Offices are better served by ceiling-mounted access points on a wired backbone from Ubiquiti, Aruba or Cisco.
