Network security for small business in Dubai

The controls that stop one infected laptop, one guest phone or one exposed camera from reaching everything else in the office, installed and documented at a fixed price.

Quick answer

Network security for a small Dubai office comes down to five controls: a business firewall with deny-by-default rules, separate networks for staff, guests and devices such as printers and cameras, secure remote access instead of open ports, Wi-Fi that identifies each user, and monitoring. Listonics installs and documents these as a fixed-scope project from AED 2,500 to AED 30,000 depending on requirement.

Why is the office network the weak point?

Because it was built for convenience. The typical Dubai small-office network is a router from the internet provider with its default settings, one Wi-Fi password shared with visitors, printers and CCTV cameras on the same network as the accounts laptop, and a port opened years ago so someone could reach the server from home. Each was reasonable on the day. Together they mean that anything that gets in, whether through a guest's phone, a phishing email or an unpatched camera, can reach everything.

The remedy is not an enterprise product. The CIS Critical Security Controls publish an implementation group for small organisations that is mostly configuration, and the CISA #StopRansomware guide says the same in plainer terms: segment the network, close what is open, control who gets in, and watch. Our cybersecurity service covers identity, email and devices; this page covers the network they sit on.

What does the network security setup include?

A business firewall replaces or sits behind the provider's router, with a rule set that starts from deny and allows only what the office needs. The network is split into at least three: staff devices, guests, and the things that should never talk to a laptop, such as printers, cameras, access control panels, meeting room screens and smart devices. Remote access moves from an open port to a client VPN or a cloud access broker tied to the user's identity and multi-factor authentication.

Wi-Fi is rebuilt so that staff authenticate with their own credentials rather than a shared password, guests get internet and nothing else, and both are separated from the wired office. Finally, monitoring: the firewall and switches report to a dashboard we watch, so a device behaving badly, an unexpected connection out, or a failed link is seen and acted on. Everything is documented in a diagram and a rule list that the next engineer can read. The office network setup page covers the physical build this security sits on.

  • Business firewall with deny-by-default rules, content filtering and intrusion prevention enabled.
  • Segmentation: staff, guest and device networks that cannot see each other.
  • Secure remote access tied to identity and MFA; no open ports to the office.
  • Wi-Fi with per-user authentication for staff and an isolated guest network.
  • Monitoring and alerting from the firewall and switches, reviewed by an engineer.
  • Network diagram and firewall rule documentation handed over at the end.

Which firewall should a small business in Dubai use?

One that is supported, updated and managed, which matters more than the brand. A business-class firewall from any of the established vendors will do the job for an office of ten to a hundred people if its subscription is kept current and someone reviews its rules. The router that came with the internet line will not, however good the connection is; it was built to pass traffic, not to inspect it.

Sizing is set by the internet line and the office, not by ambition. A firewall that inspects traffic at the speed of the line is enough; one specified for a data centre wastes money on capacity that is never used. We select from a short list of models we support every day so the configuration is consistent and a replacement can be swapped in from stock. Our firewall installation guide for offices explains what a proper installation involves.

How does segmentation stop an incident spreading?

By making the network behave like a building with locked doors rather than an open hall. If a guest's phone carries malware, it can reach the internet and nothing else. If a camera with a default password is compromised, it cannot see the accounts laptop, because the device network is not routed to the staff network. If a laptop is infected by a phishing email, the firewall's rules between segments and its intrusion prevention limit what it can reach, and the monitoring sees it trying.

Segmentation is also what makes compliance conversations short. A clinic or law firm asked where regulated data can travel can point at a diagram showing that the systems holding it sit on a network the guest Wi-Fi and the coffee machine cannot reach. That is a far better answer than a policy document.

What about staff working from home and remote access?

Remote access is where most small offices have their one genuinely dangerous exposure: a port forwarded to a server or a desktop so someone can connect from outside, often with a password and nothing else. Attackers scan for exactly that. The fix is to close the port and replace it with access that knows who the user is: a client VPN on the firewall with multi-factor authentication, or a cloud broker that publishes the application without exposing the office at all.

For offices whose work already lives in Microsoft 365, the cleaner answer is often that nobody needs to reach the office network from home at all, and identity controls such as Microsoft's Conditional Access decide who can reach the cloud from where. We work out which applies during scoping rather than selling a VPN by default.

What does network security cost for a small business in Dubai?

The project is quoted as a fixed scope after a free assessment, and Listonics projects run from AED 2,500 to AED 30,000 depending on requirement. A small office needing a firewall, three network segments and a rebuilt Wi-Fi sits toward the lower end; a multi-site business, a server room, regulated data or complex remote access sits higher. Hardware and the firewall's annual security subscription are listed separately at the vendor's price.

Ongoing monitoring, rule reviews and firmware updates then sit inside a managed IT support agreement rather than being billed per change, because a firewall that nobody updates becomes the vulnerability it was bought to prevent. Where an office is unsure what it has, the cyber security audit finds out first.

Why choose Listonics for office network security in Dubai?

Because we build the networks as well as secure them. The engineer configuring the firewall is the one who ran the cabling, set up the switches and installed the Wi-Fi, so segmentation matches how the office is actually wired rather than how a diagram imagines it. Rules are documented, monitoring is watched by a person, and the handover includes everything a future provider would need. The result is an office where an incident is contained by design rather than by luck.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The router from the internet provider passes traffic and does little else. A business firewall inspects it, enforces deny-by-default rules, separates networks, filters content, blocks known threats and reports what it sees. For an office holding client data or running on shared systems, it is the single most effective network control available.

Splitting one office network into several that cannot see each other: staff, guests and devices such as printers and cameras. It means an infected guest phone or a compromised camera cannot reach the accounts laptop. It is the control that turns a single incident into a contained one, and it is mostly configuration rather than purchase.

Listonics quotes it as a fixed-scope project after a free assessment, and projects run from AED 2,500 to AED 30,000 depending on requirement. Firewall hardware and its annual subscription are listed separately at the vendor's price. Ongoing monitoring and updates sit inside a managed support agreement rather than being charged per change.

No. An open port with a password is what attackers scan for, and it is the most common serious exposure we find in Dubai offices. Replace it with a VPN tied to multi-factor authentication, or with cloud-based access that never exposes the office at all. Often the right answer is that nobody needs to reach the office network from home.

Yes, on a guest network that provides internet access and nothing else, isolated from staff devices and the wired office. Guests should never be given the staff Wi-Fi password, and staff should authenticate with their own credentials rather than a shared one, so a departing employee's access can be removed without changing the password for everyone.

Because someone is watching it and updating it. Firewalls need firmware updates, a current security subscription and periodic rule reviews as the office changes. Listonics includes monitoring, updates and reviews inside managed support, and the alerts go to an engineer who knows the office rather than to an inbox nobody reads.
