The migrations that go wrong are the ones done live: switch the domain, hope the mail arrives, discover on Monday that half the folders are missing. The migrations that go smoothly follow one principle — copy everything ahead of time, verify it, then switch.
Mailboxes and files are synchronised to the new tenant over several days while staff keep working in the old system. On Friday evening the domain is repointed and a final delta sync runs. On Monday, people sign in to the same email address and find everything where they left it.
The other half of a good migration is structure: deciding how Teams and SharePoint are organised before you move files into them, so the new system does not inherit twenty years of folder chaos.
